We will provide insightful information on different types of shower drains that are available on the market to help you choose the one that is right for you!

Centre/Metal Drains – Pros

  • Available in a variety of different design styles to fit your bathroom aesthetic. Modern and traditional options are most common when it comes to these types of drains.
  • Available in lots of different finishes allowing you to match with your bathroom fixtures and accessories.
  • Metal drains are the most common type of shower drain and are easy to clean and maintain.
  • Most cost-effective option when it comes to drains. They are available in big box stores and very easy to replace if they get worn down or damaged.
  • Easy to install and have been around for a long time.
  • Designer and specialty options are available at higher-end showrooms if you are looking for a more elevated look. Sometimes these can have metallic accents or differently shaped cutouts within the drain to make the design more interesting.
  • Can allow you to make a statement by purchasing a contrasting finish to your tiles and fixtures.
  • Circular and squared options are available on the market.

Centre/Metal Drains – Cons

  • Not a lot of flexibility in terms of the placement of the drain within the shower.
  • Not a lot of options available in terms of sizing and shape. These usually come in a few standard sizes, so if you have more specific needs for your shower then this may not be the best option.
  • Drains from big box stores are cost-effective but do not provide a luxe feel within your bathroom.

Centre/Tileable Drains – Pros

  • Provide a seamless look within the shower and make the drain less noticeable.
  • Mid-range pricing makes these suitable for most budgets!

Centre/Tileable Drains – Cons

  • A special tile pattern or cutout in the tiles will be required to install these drains within your shower.
  • These drains come with a small key to lift them and allow for cleaning but can be a bit more challenging than dealing with a normal metal drain.
  • Don’t allow for a lot of flexibility in terms of placement within the shower.
  • Needs to be installed perfectly for a seamless look.

Linear Drains – Pros

  • Allow for flexibility in terms of placement and length of drain within the shower.
  • Wall-to-wall installation is possible and so are custom sizes!
  • Provide a more modern aesthetic within a bathroom.
  • Tileable linear drains provide a seamless look that allows the drain to blend in. The tiles become the focal point of the shower rather than the drain.
  • Available in lots of specialty and metallic finishes. Allows you to match the drain to your plumbing fixtures and accessories.
  • Provide an upgraded and high-end look to your bathroom.
  • Available in offset and centre drain options depending on the plumbing situation within your home.

Linear Drains – Cons

  • Can be tricky to maintain if you are not used to them. Strainers need to be cleaned frequently so the drains do not get clogged.
  • Come with a key to lift the grate portion and allow for cleaning, which can be more challenging than maintaining a standard drain.
  • Can be pricey compared to standard drain options.
